Tanzania Wildlife Safari Sampler
Tour Highlights
Designed for volunteers who only have a weekend available, or Kilimanjaro climbers with just a couple available days, this compact safari will get you out in the bush to experience Tanzania’s amazing wildlife before you depart.
Safari Itinerary
Pick up from your lodge/hotel in Arusha area (we can help arrange this lodging for the previous night if desired). If you are interested and it is open, we can arrange a visit to a local primary school which is great fun and an opportunity to “give back” by donating school supplies. Your first day safari park may vary depending on the season and your preferences – either Tarangire National Park or Lake Manyara National Park.
If you choose Tarangire, which is especially great July through October and known for large herds of elephant, you can overnight at Sangaiwe Tented Lodge. Or, for private safaris you might upgrade (higher cost) to Tarangire River Camp, Whistling Thorn Camp, Osopuko Lodge or Tarangire Sopa Lodge. Tarangire is well known as a dry season park, best from July through October. It’s somewhat like a “mini Serengeti” with open plains, acacia woodlands, its own mini migration of wildebeest, and often large herds of elephant.
If you choose Lake Manyara, you’ll overnight at Country Lodge, Bougainvillea Lodge, or Octagon Lodge in Karatu village unless you upgrade to other options. Enjoy your first game drive in safari vehicles whose tops can be opened for better viewing. Picnic lunch boxes in the park.
All meals included starting with lunch today.
Your plans today may vary.
– You may choose to continue in Tarangire park if you started there Day 1 and overnight at the same camp or lodge again tonight. This means you’ll only see one safari park but will have a more relaxed and in depth experience there. Or, you can depart for a game drive in Ngorongoro Crater today and overnight at the Crater or in Karatu village.
–If you started in Lake Manyara, then today you will explore Ngorongoro Crater and likely overnight at the same lodge again.
For those going to Ngorongoro Crater you will spend the day exploring the Crater – a large, intact volcanic caldera with many resident animals. There are open plains, lakes, and small forests in this self-contained ecosystem. Many animals can be seen here year-round, including the elusive Rhino.
You might return to Arusha area today, in time for evening or overnight flights on a 2 day/1 night option, or overnight in Arusha area (extra cost). Or, stay near the safari areas and save your drive back for tomorrow (Day 3) on a 3 day/2 night option.
If you didn’t come back to Arusha area late on day 2, you will do so today (about 3 hours driving). You may have time for exploring a village, shopping for colorful fabrics and souvenirs, or a visit to a Maasai village today depending on your departure plans. Or, get back in time for afternoon or evening flights. For those who chose started with Tarangire and haven’t seen Lake Manyara park yet, you can add on a game drive in Lake Manyara today if you would like and if your flights depart late enough in the day to allow time.
