Trekking the Himalaya, especially the Khumbu or Everest Area, is the trip of a lifetime for hikers and adventure seekers. The Sherpa and other local people of this region make the trip so much more special. You'll visit Sherpa villages, walk trails lined with devotional mani stones, and enjoy the peace and serenity of the Buddhist culture. Arrival into Nepal is to Khatmandu, where you will spend two nights preparing for your trek. Lodging in Khatmandu is at Hotel Marshyangdi or similar in the bustling Thamel area of the city. While in Kathmandu you will visit some Hindu and Buddhist holy places before leaving to fly to the mountains.
We fly Khatmandu to Lukla, one of the most exciting flights in the world. Then we start trekking up the main valley towards Mt. Everest. We spend two nights in Namche Bazaar, the center of the Sherpa culture and trade. An acclimatization day is spent exploring the area above Namche, perhaps including tea on the deck of the Everest View Hotel. Then we slowly head up the valley toward our ultimate destination, Everest Base Camp and the amazing views from nearby Kala Pathar, with more acclimatization along the way. Our highest elevation is the optional ascent of Kala Pathar, around 18,000'. This trek is truly an incredible experience of this magnificent region and its fascinating people. Magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and so many other snow capped mountains from the top of Kala Pathar, and many views of the peaks from the trails while hiking - including nearby Ama Dablam. During our trek, we'll stay in local lodges and teahouses. We plan to have our same local Nepal guides as Serengeti Pride's 2015 Nepal treks, again Peter Shelley with his deep knowledge of this region from years of visiting and guiding, and Lema Peter along as the Serengeti Pride trip leader in 2017.
After the flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu we spend two nights in the city (to allow sufficient time to catch our international flights in case flights from Lukla are delayed by weather). We'll spend our last day in Kathmandu as a free day before departing for home.
